Jualan dan kedudukan Proton dalam jualan dalam negara terus menjunam ke tempat ke 3 bawah Pengerusi ketika itu, Tun Dr Mahathir.

Last year, the second most popular car brand in Malaysia was Honda, even though sales have slid 3.2% from 94,902 units to 91,830 units. Its market share has also climbed from 14.2% to 15.8%.Honda’s sales success came at the expense of Proton, which slid to 3rd place behind Perodua and Honda in spite of launching four new models last year. Sales have dropped a staggering 29.2% from 102,174 units in 2015 to 72,290 units last year, while its market share has also fallen from 15.3% to 12.5%.Proton used to be the market leader in Malaysia by far. At its peak in 1993, it had 74% market share.Not only did it do badly locally, it has slumped in the export markets since 17 years ago. In the past few years, exports were almost zero despite Mahathir being the advisor and Chairman until he resigned last year.Last year, the Govt has given an emergency RM1.5 billion soft loan to Proton mainly for them to pay off their debts to their suppliers. If things do not change much, the govt either has to pump in more money or Proton will close.In order to save itself, Proton is now in talks to sell a strategic stake to 3 major global car companies - Geely from China, Peugeot and Renault.Although no official decision or offer has been made,, Geely, owner of Swedish carmaker Volvo and the London Taxi Company is said to be the front-runner among the three for a tie-up with Proton.One thing is for certain is that if the sale goes ahead to a China company, the Cap Bunga gang may make it an issue again.However, Mahathir should realize that he has failed and that the most important thing is to save Proton and secure its future and the future of their employees.They have to realize that the govt has now got to clean-up yet another mess of Mahathir's.Who knows? Proton may one day be a significant player in China, the largest auto market in the world as well as elsewhere should this tie-up take place - the same way that Volvo has now gained popularity and sales in China since Geely bought them.----
Mahathir hanya leka dengan impian dan wawasan sering tidak boleh menerima kenyataan dan realiti semasa.
Mana tidak, zaman dia bolehlah kamu adang orang lain dan naikkan cukai pengeluar kereta lain untuk "paksa" orang ramai dan jabatan kerajaan beli Proton.
Akhinya ia tidak menjadikan Proton sebenarnya berdaya maju dan kompetitif untuk hadapi cabaran semasa.
