NEWS: Wolfensohn and Camdesus concern for Anwar but not justice for victim Saiful

When Anwar's sodomy act surfaced again, former World Bank chief, James Wolfensohn, and former head of International Monetary Fund, Michel Camdessus from his days as Minister of Finance came out in support.

They together with former Canadian Prime Minister, Paul Martin seek Malaysia to drop charges. The AFP news report below:

Ex-IMF, WB bosses ask Malaysia to drop Anwar sodomy charge

July 25, 2008

PARIS -- Malaysia should drop its sodomy charges against opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim, said a joint statement by three former leading figures on the international stage.

"We have heard with deep concern the charges filed against the honorable Datuk Seri Dr. Anwar Ibrahim," said the statement by former Canadian prime minister Paul Martin, ex-World Bank chief James Wolfensohn, and Michel Camdessus, the former head of the International Monetary Fund.

They said the charges were brought "in spite of the fact that similar unsubstantiated charges filed 10 years ago against him were overturned by the Supreme Court."

They therefore hoped that "the government of Malaysia will ... demonstrate, by dropping the charges... an exemplary sense of respect for the rights of the individual which are so important to the international standing of Malaysia."

The three reiterated their "full confidence in his (Anwar's) moral integrity."

Anwar spent a night in custody last week after being arrested over accusations that he sodomized a 23-year-old male aide. He was released on bail.

The events threaten to derail Anwar's spectacular political comeback, after March elections that handed the opposition a third of parliamentary seats.

Anwar was sacked as deputy premier in 1998 and jailed on sodomy and corruption charges widely seen as politically motivated. The sex conviction was overturned by the nation's highest court in 2004.
Did they bother to ask about the victim, Saiful? Don't he need the justice he deserve? Shouldn't the court be the deciding party in a criminal issue in which one is a victim?

NEWS: Anwar claims Fairus quit to pursue studies

by Adib Zalkapli
The Malaysia Insider, Sunday, 22 March 2009

PETALING JAYA, March 21 — Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim avoided comment today on the cloud of suspicion over abuse of power allegations by Fairus Khairuddin, claiming instead that the Penang deputy chief minister had quit to pursue his studies.

Anwar claimed that Fairus wanted to pursue a post-graduate degree.

His resignation, which takes affect from April 8, was only made public today and was said to be related to the reports lodged by a party member that two senior PKR leaders were involved in corruption.

"It would not be easy for him to continue to function as deputy chief minister and state executive councillor. I accept and respect his decision," Anwar told reporters, adding that his relationship with Fairus was still good.

"We are still in communication. In fact he contacted me this morning," he added.

Despite Anwar's claims, it is understood the de facto PKR leader had instructed Fairus to quit his post because mounting allegations against the DCM had made his position untenable.

Rumour of Fairus's resignation began to surface on Wednesday but Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng had issued an immediate denial.

Anwar had previously ticked off Fairus publicly because he was unhappy that the DCM failed to even visit his constituency.

Anwar said today that Fairus remains the state assemblyman for Penanti.

"He can still come to his constituency to perform his duties," he said.

When asked who would replace Fairus in the Penang government, the Opposition Leader said the matter did not arise.

"The chief minister had said that he will take over his duties," said Anwar.

On reported opposition to the selection of S. Manikumar as the PKR candidate for the Bukit Selambau by-election, Anwar said it was not possible to get a candidate who could satisfy every party and hoped that Hindraf would not field an independent.

"My relationship with Uthayakumar and Waytamoorthy is good. I hope they will consider the interest of the Indian community and Hindus rather than the interest of a few individuals," said Anwar.

NEWS: Anwar to re-submit file on black-eye case

The Star, Friday, 20 March 2009

KUALA LUMPUR: PKR de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said he would re-submit to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission a complete file of materials and documents in relation to allegations that the Inspector-General of Police and the Attorney-General had covered up his “black-eye” case.

Anwar, who had on March 3, submitted documents relating to the case to various commission members, said he had not got a response but would submit a complete dossier this time.

“The last time I only submitted part of the documents available. I am also writing to the MACC advisory board chairman Tun Abdul Hamid Mohamad to ask for a review of the previous decision by its commissioner Datuk Seri Ahmad Said Hamdan that there was no case,” he said yesterday.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Nazri Abdul Aziz had earlier told Dewan Rakyat that a panel probing Anwar’s complaints had cleared Tan Sri Musa Hassan and Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail of any wrongdoing.

NEWS: Anwar coy about Fairus’s future

by Lee Wei Lian & Asrul Hadi Abdullah Sani
The Malaysian Insider Thursday

KUALA LUMPUR, March 19 — Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was forced today to dispel swirling rumours that he had asked PKR’s Penang deputy chief minister Fairus Khairuddin to resign amid a cloud of suspicion.

But The Malaysian Insider understands that Anwar is planning to announce Fairus’s resignation at a public rally in Bukit Gantang, Perak tonight.

Anwar appeared uneasy when asked by reporters in Parliament about speculation over Fairus’s position.

“As far as I know, Fairus is carrying out his duties and is on leave for a few days,” he replied when asked to confirm the rumours.

“There are many other national issues,” he said when pressed on the issue, and declined to elaborate further.

Despite Anwar’s best efforts, it appears that Fairus’s position in the Penang state government appears untenable because he faces a mountain of allegations over suspected abuse of power.

Earlier today, Penang Chuef Minister Lim Guan Eng also denied his deputy had resigned.

“As of now he is still the deputy chief minister,” Lim had told reporters.

When asked if he was pleased with Fairus’s performance as DCM, Anwar replied that he had performed well in some areas but had room for improvement in others.

He also sidestepped a question on whether there were conflicts between Fairus and PKR.

“Umno also is conflicting with PKR,” he replied.

Speculation about Fairus’s resignation surfaced yesterday after an anonymous text message was circulated saying that he was instructed to quit by Anwar over allegations of abuse of power.

Fairus’s appointment as deputy chief minister has been a source of controversy and he has been told off by Anwar for not even visiting his constituency. He was also forced to quit as Penang Football Association president due to his lack of enthusiasm.

Speculation is also rife that he is one of two PKR leaders in Penang accused of corrupt dealings involving a quarry.

MYSTERY: US State Department defend Anwar's sodomy act?

The US State Department had issued the Human Rights Country Report 2008 for Malaysia. The report is available in full here. The report mentioned of Anwar's sodomy case and cited issues with regard to the manner the police undertook their work. Read the snippet below:

On July 16, authorities arrested political opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim for alleged consensual sodomy with a former aide and held Anwar overnight for questioning. The Bar Council and other civil society groups objected to the police use of intimidating tactics to arrest Anwar one hour before Anwar was due at the police station for voluntarily arranged questioning. On July 28, the police reportedly questioned and briefly detained a medical doctor who found no evidence of sodomy when examining the complainant, which the Bar Council described as "very troubling." On August 7, prosecutors charged Anwar in court under the penal code for "consensual carnal intercourse against the order of nature," which carries a potential sentence of 20 years in jail. The court released Anwar on bail, and the case remained ongoing at year's end.

Despite official affirmations that Anwar's arrest and prosecution were not politically based, senior government officials made repeated public comments prejudicial to the case. Government officials also highlighted the charges during a late-August by-election, which resulted in Anwar's election to parliament. Civil society groups, including human rights organizations, and international Muslim figures raised concerns over the political motivation of the government's prosecution of Anwar; they drew parallels between Anwar's arrest during the year with Anwar's arrest in 1998 and subsequent conviction for sodomy, which was overturned on appeal in 2004.
All one needs to remember back to the days of the incident to recall Anwar's antic when a police report was lodged against him. The US State Department basically took Anwar's acting and excuses "hook, line and sinker" without getting the police side of the story.

The report questioned remarks and statements made by officials deemed as prejudicial against Anwar but did no mention of Anwar's wild accusations against many parties which are equally prejudicial. Why didn't the report mention of Anwar's contemptuous accusation of Najib's involvement in a murder without submitting any evidence?

It's obvious the US State Department is bias in favour of Anwar. The powerful pro-Israeli US Government could rightfully be expressing concern for victims. One wonder why they were not concerned when Israelis are wiping Palestinians daily and about to obliterate Gaza?

Are they buttering Anwar's bread?

NEWS: Anwar's suit against Chandra fixed for Aug 4

The Sun, Thursday, 14 May 2009

KUALA LUMPUR (May 13, 2009) : A defamation suit brought by Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim against former Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) deputy president Chandra Muzaffar will be heard by the High Court on Aug 4.

The date was fixed by a deputy registrar of the court today when the case was brought up for case management.

In his statement of claim filed on March 6 last year, Anwar asked for RM10 million as compensation in addition to damages in respect of slanderous statements reported in The Star and the New Straits Times of March 4.

Anwar had filed his suit after Chandra had refused to apologise or retract his statements which were made at a public forum before the 2008 general election.

Chandra, who was one of five speakers at the forum, had said that it would be an "unmitigated disaster for Malaysia" should Anwar become prime minister.

"The remarks I had made are fully borne out by facts and information within my personal knowledge. I stand by my remarks and will defend them in any court of law," Chandra had said on March 5 after Anwar threatened to sue him.

BERITA: Kes liwat didengar Julai, Anwar kata "pertarungan sudah mula"

mStar, Selasa Mac 10, 2009

KUALA LUMPUR: Kes liwat Ketua Umum Pakatan Rakyat, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim akan didengar oleh Mahkamah Tinggi Julai ini.

Mahkamah menetapkan 1 hingga 24 Julai sebaga tarikh perbicaraan pagi tadi.

Awang Selamat, Mingguan Malaysia, 8hb Mac 2009

BERITA: Saiful Buat Laporan Polis Berhubung Fitnah Mengenai Kesihatannya

NEWS: Saiful lodges police report against blog

The Star, Tuesday March 3, 2009

KUALA LUMPUR: Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan lodged a police report against the Pahang Daily Online blog over articles claiming he had contracted an STD (sexually transmitted disease).

The former aide to Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the website published six articles claiming that he was critically ill due to STD from September last year.

Mohd Saiful denied the reports after lodging a report at the Damansara police station here Tuesday.

“As you can see for yourselves, I am perfectly fine and healthy. I am and was not bedridden or ill as claimed by the website. I want to stress that I do not have an STD or any other sickness.

“These are all lies and slander created by irresponsible people. I want the police to investigate and take immediate action against those responsible,” he said.

Mohd Saiful arrived at the station at 11am accompanied by his father Azlan Mohd Lazim, 55, and lawyer, Zamri Idrus.

On June 28 last year, the 23-year-old former Universiti Tenaga Nasional student leader lodged a police report alleging that he had been sodomised by Anwar at the Desa Damansara Condominium in Bukit Damansara on June 26.

Anwar has denied the allegation. The case is ongoing.
